More and more of our news is being delivered to us via electronic outlets, whether it's via the internet or social media applications. Colleges and universities have increased their presence on social media as a means of outreach and recruitment to prospective students and families across the country. Higher education leaders, specifically campus Presidents, should also increase their social media presence as well.
Campus presidents are not only the face of the university to the campus community, but also to the community surrounding the campus. Using social media, specifically Twitter, allows those not in immediate contact with the President an opportunity to engage and also learn more about the President's core values, personal mission, and perspective. This provides an opportunity to forge new partnerships, relationships, and networks (if done well).
Campus presidents have an amazing opportunity to use Twitter to keep the campus informed and engaged, to garner support and/or feedback, and communicate wins and/or challenges. It's an opportunity to connect with more constituents than they could in-person or via email. It also provides space for public dialogue in ways that may not be present in another context. Presidents who tweet give their "followers" a sneak peak into their lives, both personal (to some extent) and professionally.
Lastly, tweeting gives the campus President a larger audience and a broader reach across the nation. Tweeting helps with recruitment, retention, and alumni/community relations. It gives the Presidents an opportunity to discuss policies and implications, while also increasing awareness around the policy. In doing so, energy is created around the issue which can help Presidents move an agenda forward.
